ZANICAR

Systems architect & engineer.

I design and build systems. The hard part is rarely building something — it’s building the right thing. I love sharing my experience, and learning from others in return. This is where I muse.

Who I am

I’m Billa Coetsee — a.k.a. Zanicar, since the dawn of the Internet.

I’m a systems architect and engineer, and what drives me is understanding how things work, how they interrelate, and how they could work better together. Handed a problem, my instinct is to first understand the system’s actual objectives, its current expression, and its ideal state within its actual environment — to avoid solving the wrong problem. I like being in both places at once, the high-level strategy and the low-level implementation; I’ve rarely found one makes sense without the other.

That curiosity has taken me across two decades of enterprise infrastructure, a term chairing the Business Software Alliance (BSA) in South Africa, and several years engineering protocols for self-sovereign blockchain networks — three of them now launched and running, across the Cosmos and Sui ecosystems. I hold an MSc in Technology Management, and a background in psychology I lean on to understand both people and machines. Most systems fail at this interface, and much of my work is translating cleanly across it — and building teams that cooperate rather than compete.

Over the years I’ve developed an architecture that prizes comprehensibility over purity. The cleverest design is worth little if the person who inherits it — often a future version of me — has to excavate its meaning three years on. So I build for clarity that lasts: separating what a system must do from the constraints it runs under, and preserving the reasoning behind a decision, not just its result. What I offer is a way of working — a systems approach designed to make the result you’re after inevitable, not by promising certainty but by being honest about intents, constraints, and capabilities.
